I have a suspicion, after reading "Hillbilly Elegy" that J. D. just might be a little artifical himself. Notice I left out intelligence.
My laptop just had a new version upgrade. Microsoft word's new Word has an A.I. embeddeed in its program. Everytime you want to type, there's a notice for you to click on a button to use the A.I. I don't want to use the A.I., so I have to type over the notice when then disappears until the next line. There's no way to remove it. I'm very suspicious of something that is so intrustive as this.

I suspect everyone who writes a memoir controls the narrative to some extent. How much? That is the question.
